    *.mkv files are able just containers, which normally hold higher quality and more compressed (for less space but not quality) files than the normal *.avi. Really there isn't anything wrong with them at all. Use Media Player Classic and k-lite codecs to play them. If you download the K-lite codecs directly from their site (just do a google search ) you'll get them both in the same download.
